This is one of the rarest SA marked pistols and HSc variants known, I am aware of 4-5 that are held in collections in the US. In 98%+ condition, we have a late 1944 production Mauser HSc pistol that is marked NSDAP SA Gruppe Alpenland. The pistol is in exceptional mint condition and is of course all matching. According to the actual Mauser Oberndorf Factory sales records, this pistol is one of 40 that were purchased from Mauser By SA Gruppe Alpenland in October of 1944. This record is pictured on page 274 of the 2008 book Mauser Pistolen by Weaver Speed and Schmid.
This pistol has been in one collection since it walked into the Columbus OGCA show in 1967. 6 years later it was pictured in a 1973 collector magazine as well. This provenance is helpful as this is from a time when these things were not being boosted and collecting WW2 firearms was just beginning to get organized. Today’s collector has the benefit of many decades of research and scholarship which add much to the hobby, but back in the 50’s and the 60’s this stuff was very much taken for granted as you would an SKS rifle today. This is an extremely rare important and well documented SA issued pistol from late in the war.
