Prior to the outbreak of WW2, Nippon Special Steel produced blank firing training rifles, what collectors often refer to as school rifles to train Japanese High School and University students in the use of military small arms. These training aides were designed to fire only blank ammunition and were smooth bored and made of low strength metals. That is not what this is………this is a late war “Last Ditch” rifle. The bore is rifled and this was actually meant to be used in actual combat as a service rifle. To fire this weapon with a live round would certainly be an act of attempted suicide; this rifle is not meant to be shot under any circumstances today. It was manufactured substantially better than a training rifle but the metallurgy is completely sketchy and certainly not up to any safe level. This rifle is very well made for a training rifle and it is in excellent condition. It is quite solidly and well built but it is strictly a historical curiosity.
