First let me say that it is the general policy of this firm to only take in and offer mint original condition collectible guns in 95% or better condition; this is one of the few exceptions to that policy and its important that you are aware of this right at the beginning. The reasons why we are offering this piece is because it is not a hack job and if it were completely original we would be asking $23,000.00 for it. The pistol is rare enough that this iteration is certainly acceptable to most serious collectors, especially at the very modest price point for what it is.
In partially restored condition we have an extremely rare (3,636) 1939 US Navy issued Colt 1911a1 US Army Service Pistol. This pistol was shipped to the Naval Supply Depot in Sewell’s Point Virginia on December 18, 1939. The frame of the pistol is original production and textbook correct, however the slide was replaced with an extremely rare un-numbered period correct Colt Factory Government supplied spare replacement slide. The barrel while a Colt barrel dates from early 1943. This pistol appears to have been a 1939 Navy gun that had a damaged slide that was replaced in service. We have no idea when this was done but it could have been done as early as 1943 or as late as yesterday, there is just no way of knowing. On the other hand we have a very visually appealing pre-war Government US Navy Colt in all of its glory and that in and of itself is saying something. If you want an extremely attractive eye-poping 1939 US Navy Colt that is not over $20,000 then this pistol really makes a lot of sense to own, the sum of the parts are well worth what we are asking for it.
