In excellent all matching condition, this certainly has to be one of the most unusual and unique German WWI rifles in North America. We have a 1917 dated Oberspree Kornbusch Gew 98 Mauser Rifle, serial #5 that has incomplete acceptance stampings and additional markings Such as “A” and ‘H” indicting that it is a factory test, toolroom, training or trials rifle. Clearly this rifle was used for some purpose in the factory or German Arsenal system and was not intended for service use. How it it got here is a bit of a mystery but its thought to have been a WW2 vet bringback. An interesting aspect of the stock is on the right side of the butt the imperial acceptance cartouches are missing but there are clear indentations in the the stock marking exactly where they should be placed.
Kornbusch is the rarest and most sought after of the contracted Gew 98 Rifles, that this very unique and unusual piece has survived to this day certainly makes it the rarest and most unique rifle that is in existence from this maker.
