In excellent all matching condition, we have a fairly early 1944 production Mauser Oberndorf made byf 44 coded K98k Service Rifle. This rifle is extremely desirable due to the fact that the stock is walnut and an extremely attractive piece at that with a very sharp looking eagle/WaA135 cartouche. Byf 44 coded 98k rifles are certainly the most commonly encountered variant, but to find a scarce example with a walnut stock and this nice and matching is not an easy thing to do. Many if not most of the Mauser rifles brought back from the war were sporterized into hunting rifles which at the time seemed like the sensible thing to do in order to make something heavy more usable in the field where your quarry is 4 legged. With the passage of time it became more apparent that original colector examples of this very iconic WW2 firearm were not all that common since many had been chopped up. Today the K98k Mauer rifle is one of the most avidly collected of all firearms in the gun collecting field.
