Here we have an extreme German WW2 era rifle rarity. In excellent matching condition, we have a 1918/1920 dated Amberg Gewehr 98 Muaser Service Rifle that was in 1939, at the Spandau Arsenal Rebuilt to K98k Service Rifle configuration. This is a textbook example, meeting all the criteria to be considered as such a rebuild. All the boxes are checked, dovetailed stock sling modification, bent original bolt, original ww1 stock and furniture, everything numbered to match. The clues to wear this work was done was elusive when I surveyed this piece but I did find a small Su27 /1939 stamp on the top of the matching handguard. The barrel is also dated 1939 as well.
True genuine gew98/K98k conversions are quite rare and seldom seen. There are many cobbled together bastardizations out there but none can claim to be authentic. This is a true bonafide example of a very scarce and important variant of the K98k. When you also understand that this type of rebuilt weapon was almost certainly destined for the Waffen SS the allure grown even stronger. How I wanted to keep this and toss it into my stash!!!
